Sony SGPT111US/S Wi-Fi Tablet (16GB)

IN SHORT, I am very positively impressed by Sony S1 and think it is one of the best, if not the best, Android tablets made so far. My other favorite Android tablet is Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. I would not regret to own either of them, but I now prefer Sony S1 for its unique handholding ergonomics (see detailed discussions below).

Running a comparison among the top tablets including iPad 2, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and this one (Sony S1) makes me feel we consumers are really spoiled. These products are all so good for what they are. It is like comparing different flavors of ice cream, and one might end up wanting to eat all of them. But still, the Sony S1 manages to somehow stand out with a few quite significant unique features.

On the other hand, even the best iPads and Android tablets cannot replace my Windows-based laptop computer. Like many, I do work on my computer. In fact I can't work without my computer. As much as I like the convenience of the current tablets, none of them comes even close to giving me the whole spectrum of business software applications and the ecosystem. This is not a complaint against a computing device that costs less than $500. It is just a statement of reality.

To name a few of PC software and system tools that lack a reasonable substitute on either iOS or Android: (1) sophisticated file system management (local, LAN and cloud), (2) the Office system (beyond Word, including PowerPoint, Excel), (3) NaturallySpeaking Pro (business-grade full-text speech recognition), (4) image editing and other multimedia creation and editing programs (such as Photoshop), (5) OneNote, (6) Microsoft's unmatched handwriting recognition, (7) Visio (vector drawing software), and (8) CRM, QuickBooks, business databases and other professional software. To me, a computer for work has to have almost all of these capabilities. I'm waiting for the Windows 8 tablet to come out to replace my laptop for this purpose (more about this at the end of this review).

But this review is not a fight between Windows and iOS/Android (which are frankly entirely different leagues serving different purposes). It's just some thoughts of a happy consumer with regard to a good product.

In the following, I will list and comment on some major aspects of Sony S1, starting with the ones that distinguish Sony S1 from the crowd the most, and ones that I personally think are more important.

Toshiba Satellite L755D-S5162 15.6 -Inch Laptop (Silver)

I bought this laptop a week ago from Amazon. It arrived on time and looked great out of the box. I switched it on and was running windows in less than 5 mts.. The keyboard and scroll pad are nice. Charged the battery to 100% and did video/audio streaming for 3.5 hrs continuously. The battery lasted all along with 13% left after 3.5 hrs. The laptop also felt cool. Excellent graphics and HD pictures. I think the laptop will easily last 5.5 to 6 hrs on normal use. That is value for my money right there. The webcam, mic and LED screen are decent. There are 3 USB ports and there is also a sleep n charge, which means I don't have to have the computer on to charge my USB devices. That is a cool feature. Also, the laptop weighs abt 5.5 lbs and that is not too bad to carry around. I have owned 3 HP laptops before and this is my first Toshiba laptop. I'm very happy with it.

The price is an advantage. $479.99 for a quad core processor with excellent graphics and all standard features. I did not pay tax or shipping to amazon. This is the best deal I found online for a great processing power, excellent battery life, everyday computing laptop. Did I mention it did not produce any heat? I saved around $20 on a cooling pad!

I am very pleased with this product... I like Toshiba computers after having my last one last six years with no breakdown. I like the color. The new one's battery has been lasting something under one and one-half hours, I think. Amazon delivered it quickly and in good shape. It runs with Windows 7 my old programs and new ones too. I had thought I would like to wait until Windows 8, to get a new computer, but I could not stand the old computer's slow and faulty running any longer. I am very happy with this purchase and recommend it to anyone who just needs a workhorse home computer. The price point seemed very good to me.

I love this thing! i bought it for games and school-work, and boy does it get the job done! I play games like Crysis 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 at the highest settings possible. it also didn't come with as much bloatware as i thought it would! my only complaint is that there is nothing on the keyboard for volume control, but it is highly overlookable due to everything being so great. it boots up in less than a minute and does things 5x as fast as my desktop! bottom line, save ur trip to best buy and buy this sweet piece of machinery!

Coby Kyros 7-Inch Android 4.0 4 GB 16:9 Resistive Touchscreen Internet Tablet, Black MID7033-4

I work nights in a home health environment, so I have some free time while my clients sleep. I decided to get a tablet so I could access Facebook, Angry Birds, and Netflix, along with some other apps to help pass the slower hours. I am not trying to remote dock a space capsule to the space station, so I didn't need all of the bells and whistles from a $1,000 tablet. This tablet does everything I need. I can access the internet, play the games I want, and watch movies. I downloaded the Amazon Appstore which has more apps than Google Play, and it was so easy...it is hard to understand some of the reviews. They might have just not been aware of how to do it, which is fine...not everyone can do it.

My five stars is not a comparison to other, far more expensive tablets...that's not a review, it is a comparison. I am reviewing the tablet based on it performing the way it is supposed to for what it is. I can watch movies on Netflix with no lag. I can play Angry Birds and Bejeweled. I can surf the internet, and use Facebook and Twitter. The only feature that some resistive screen tablets have that this one doesn't is pinch to zoom. Some R screens have two touch sensitivity, but this one doesn't. I won't lower the score because almost every app allows for a zoom in/out button, so it isn't an inconvenience. This is a fun tablet and in a time where many people need to be more conscientious about what they are throwing money at, this is a great option.

Let me preface this review by saying I have an Ipad and was not expecting an Ipad when I bought this. I wanted an inexpensive Android tablet to play with so this seemed to fit the bill and was an Amazon Prime item, so I went ahead with the purchase. When I received the tablet I opened it right away and started playing with it and found the interface fairly easy to navigate (after I figured out what pressure was needed to use on the screen). It is a resistive screen rather than the Ipad's capacitive so one needs to press down harder on the screen than with the Ipad. I found that a stylus works better on this kind of screen.

The 7 inch screen has its pros and cons - 7 inches is a little small to read on some websites and the gestures you need to use to zoom in are hard to master and don't work on some sites. It is small enough to drop in a bag and take with you. At $90.00 or so I am more comfortable taking that along everyday than the $500 Ipad.

For me the deal breaker was that you cannot access the Google Play (formerly Android Market) store. There is a GetJar app pre-installed on the device that gives you access to some of the apps in the Google Play store but unfortunately the ones that I was interested in were not included in GetJar. If you are interested in certain apps check the GetJar website first to see if they are offered on GetJar before you order this tablet. I ended up returning the tablet a few hours after I opened it. Amazon refunded my credit card quickly but I would have liked it if I had a choice for shipping the tablet back without them deducting $9.08 from my refund for shipping. They only offered a pre-paid label option and since I ship for my home based business I could have found more economical shipping options than this.

Apple MacBook Pro MD322LL/A 15.4-Inch Laptop

So awesome. Great OS, fabulous improvements to the existing line bumping up the processor speed and adding the thunderbolt port. This is my second MacBook. The first one I had was a 2006 model, not the Pro. I fell in love with it. This one has had the same effect. I had upgraded my old MacBook to Lion, so I kind of knew what I was getting, but hadn't been able to enjoy some of the awesome new multi-touch features. The improvements to the OS have been relatively gradual, but substantive. The feel of this machine compared to the old MacBook is far superior. The Unibody construction is solid, sleek and beautiful. It is everything I'd hoped it would be from a look and feel standpoint, but somehow a bit more sturdy.

For the not so good, I got the stock screen - which is VERY glossy. I mean ... REALLY glossy. It's still beautiful and has better color reproduction than I could ever expect from a notebook. The reflectiveness of the display is only a minor inconvenience if you work in a controlled-lighting environment like me (I prefer it dark) or if you can crank up the brightness.

My real problem with it? The statement of 7 hour battery life is not just mere exaggeration -- it's a lie. I challenge anyone to show proof that through anywhere near normal use can get more than 2.5 hrs out of it. I've got the brightness all the way down to just one notch above 'off' and the keyboard backlight off. The first full charge of this battery got me only about 2 full hours. Enabling the battery timer is useless. The "Time remaining" goes from 4 hours plus to less than 2 hours over the span of about 10 minutes. It's a joke. It's so bad that I'm thinking I only got half a battery or something.

I researched this purchase EXTENSIVELY via Amazon, Best Buy, other retailers, and my local university (with educational pricing for staff/students/faculty). In the end, I ended up purchasing this machine from Best Buy as the price was the same and I had a line of credit (although I had to pay tax: hey, someone has to help pay for our roads, right?)

In short, I can't say enough positive things about this purchase. This machine is INCREDIBLY fast, the interface is slick (although it takes some getting used to coming from the Windows world - especially window minimizing and the function keys), and with an iPhone 4S and iPad 2, iTunes syncing is a DREAM compared to Windows (on purpose, El Steve?).

The screen is plenty big (if you're waffling between 15" and 17", go to a local Best Buy or Apple Store and play around with each - the 17" has better resolution, but lift them up and check the weight - I prefer the 15" for portability and weight, but you're choice will depend on use), and I ordered the 8GB memory package from Amazon (which should show up any day now). Regarding memory I will say: 4GB is just enough; the OS and apps eat up just about every bit, so I'm looking forward to 8GB.

The backlit keyboard is a dream to type on, the magnetic charger is kid-proof, and the multi-touch trackpad alone is well worth the price (I'm a big fan of the two-finger "reverse scrolling", the back-and-forth swiping in Safari is SO convenient, and the 3/4 finger swiping to bring up LaunchPad and the like is great).

My sole complaint is the lack of USB ports, but only because I'm using a Logitech M305 wireless mouse. If I had a true Mac-compatible Bluetooth mouse this wouldn't be an issue, but in hooking up an external USB drive for Time Machine backups (a Western Digital 2TB) and the Logitech dongle, I'm out of USB ports when I have to sync my iPhone or iPad. But hey, with everything else being incredibly integrated, I'm not complaining THAT much.

Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5540 15.6 -Inch Laptop (Black)

So, this laptop is low priced, but high powered, at least for what I need it to do. I am pretty much like everyone else and just browse the web and check email on this thing and it does the job just fine for that. It is quick and clippy and I absolutely love having a number key pad. My only complaint about this is that it does not have a USB port on the right hand side of the laptop. Why is this important you ask? Mouse. I have a small travel mouse that I usually use with my laptops and with this one, it has to be plugged all the way on the other side of the laptop. It's kind of inconvenient, but not a deal breaker with me.

This would be a great laptop for a kid going off to college or any casual user to just have around the house.

BE WARNED: as with most new laptops these days, this one does not come with installation DVD's. That means that if you get a virus or something, you will not have a way to reinstall Windows. It does however have a method for MAKING a backup. I highly recommend that you do this IMMEDIATELY before using the laptop. When I did it, it required 5 (yes five) blank DVD's, so make sure that you have some on hand. If you skip this step, you will rue the day down the road. The fun part is that the printed instructions are pretty stupid and look to be generic for all Toshiba laptops. To make the backup do the following.

it's my third toshiba, and probably my last. There is a huge difference between families of Toshiba's, and this is the lowest level. Basically, it's made of really cheap plastic. Simply opening the cover eventually caused the plastic to break apart in the back by then power supply and not charge. Talking with the "toshiba" warranty service stated that "damage isn't covered". To send it in for warranty repair (and mine is less than 1 year old) is $129, and if it's not a major repair, add another $125, plus $30 shipping. It's eye opening. If you do get this, get it with a very very good warranty, one that covers "accidental" damage, because you will need to prove that you didn't jar it, or drop it, to get coverage. And that is impossible. Or, just get a better laptop. Laptop.

As usual, Amazon has come through. We needed a laptop for a young man going to college, and decided to use Amazon because they always come through. The Toshiba Satellite C655D is the laptop my wife chose, and we thought it would be an in-expensive solution to a young college student with serious Internet needs. This is the solution.

Toshiba Satellite R845-S85 14.0-Inch LED Laptop - Graphite Blue Metallic with Line Pattern

This is a relatively new laptop from Toshiba, without any reviews posted before mine, so I wrote what follows to try to supply some information to people who were trying to decide whether to take advantage of a one-day Amazon special. That special is now over, and this computer is currently listed for its regular Amazon price, which is about $150 more than it was on November 23rd. With the large number of sales of this model recorded yesterday, hopefully reviewers with hands-on experiences to share should show up in a while.

[Original review follows:] I am writing this review on a day [November 23, 2011] that this laptop is an Amazon featured special, and at its special price I think it is definitely worth considering. Since there are no hands-on reviews to consider and you only have today to decide on the special price, I suggest that you compare this model with the very popular Toshiba R835-P56x, which is also available on Amazon and has lots of reviews. I will summarize the comparability of these two laptops in a moment, but suffice it to say that they are in the same ballpark regarding features and performance. For today, at least, the R845-S85 is being offered at a significantly lower price.

The R845-S85 has a slightly larger screen (14 inch versus 13.3 inch), a similar Intel Core i5 processor (Core i5-2430M versus Core i5-2410M), has 6GB of RAM (versus 4GB), similar integrated graphics, same hard drive (640GB), similar ports, same optical drive, the same Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit operating system, and features a claimed 10 hour battery life (versus 8 hours). One potentially important disadvantage compared to the R835-P56x is that the R845-S85 weighs 4.2 pounds, versus 3.2 pounds. The more you carry around your laptop, perhaps the more this difference will be meaningful to you.

Simply put, there is no such thing as a laptop with the longest battery life, most powerful processor and graphics capabilities, strongest construction and lowest price. You need to decide which features are most important to you and then narrow your selection accordingly. If what you want is a model with good processing capability, relatively light weight, good battery performance and an optical drive--all at a very good price--then this R845-S85 model is well worth your consideration.

Full disclosure: I own the Toshiba R835-P70, which is the R835-P56x (that I used as the comparison above) with Wi-Max capability added. I have had no problems with it, and for my use (mostly business) its combination of features make it the best laptop I have owned.

One more thing: There is an interesting suggestion for an external laptop speaker buried in the comments section (I think it's about the 16th comment). Since laptops, especially smaller ones like this, are not known for having high quality speakers, you may find this speaker worth a look.

Apple iPad 2 MC916LL/A Tablet (64GB, Wifi, Black) 2nd Generation

I bought an IPAD 2 64 gig 3g Verizon model the first week it came out. I bought it online. I received it 3 1/2 weeks later from china. It was amazing for the first 20 hours. The apps were so unbelievable. I have a touch, and it is so much better. On the second day, it started trying to shut down. The battery was at 80%. I tried shutting it off and could not. I called apple. I bought the extra care plan for 90 dollars so they are going to help me. Right? Wrong. The first representative we talked to had us restore it to the factory settings. It took 1 hour to download the 660 mg file. We then restored it to the factory settings. It started working perfectly. We were so happy. The problem was solved! I watched videos and played with it for hours. I ran the battery down and plugged it in overnight to charge. The next morning the problem was back in spades. It then started doing new things like flashing on and off. I went on the website and asked a specialist to call me again. She put me on hold. She was gone for a little while. When she came back, she said that I needed to mail it back to them to REPAIR it. I said What? I have the apple care plan and was told that you would send me a replacement. I have not even had this thing 2 days. She said that the other representative lied to me, and that she could not lie to me. I have 2 options. I can take it to the Apple Store (nearest one 165 miles away) or I can mail it and have it repaired and they will send the same one back to me. She made me an appointment at the store. I am driving the 165 miles to take it back. The second representative (a supervisor) told me that they would send me a replacement if I gave them a credit card and let them charge another 900 dollars for it. When they received the old one back, they would charge it back to me.

I have had a kindle for years. The day I saw it on the Oprah show was the day I fell in love with it. I bought one the same day. The first kindle i received was great except the internet would not work. I called Amazon and they shipped me out a kindle the SAME DAY! I got it a couple of days later and loved it. It worked perfectly. I upgraded to a DX and have never had a problem.

If you want to see a video of what it is doing, you can go to you tube and watch it. My username is caulret. I love Amazon and their amazing customer service!

So I'm in the kitchen, listening to my music library, and typing a review for the I-Pad 2. I have put a little more than 14 hours of research and 6 hours of non-stop use. I'm not gonna waste my time writing the specs for this device because if you are reading this I assume you already know the specifications, if not you can easily access the Apple website and do your own research. This review is aimed more towards the educated consumer. A consumer, who like me, has spent various hours of the night researching and contemplating his or her next moves.

First, I want to start off with the word "tablet", what is a tablet and who needs it? As an avid P.C. user, I tend to define the device as too short, too little. A underpowered, pre-mature device not ready for this day and age. The truth is, their are more people out there who need a tablet versus a laptop. Having a quad core, overclocked, power hungry P.C. I am like most other users; who tend to have a bias when selecting/comparing portable products. I have been for some time; looking for a laptop with great battery life, portability and power? I first went out and purchased a Macbook pro for about $1199+ some. After a couple weeks of use I was in love. I could not stop showing it off and playing with it. Then I attempted to play games and yes they were playable! But I found myself running to my P.C. whenever I was gonna get serious and then I found myself using my desktop when editing videos. Yet again, I found myself running to my P.C. when it came to doing anything that involved time and effort... It was at this point that I realized that I never used my laptop for more than a hour. Utilizing a mere 20-40% of its power. I used it for; writing papers, showing off pictures and Internet browsing. So I decided to return it. In search for something that made sense.

I never considered a net-book useful or even worthy of my time, even less a tablet. The Motorola Xoom came out and I thought it had potential compared to last years 256MB I-Pad. It offers 1GB of internal memory and 32GB of storage space, all for $599. It not only had the potential, but also the power I craved. Although, its pre-mature operating system was a deterrence. This is the same thing that turned me away from the original IPad. Dispite the fact that I liked the original, if people didn't demand it, the product would die and I would be left with a 500 dollar piece of silicon or waste. I needed something portable and practical. I just felt the tablet was a little more practical, if not more useful too because of its portability and extended battery life. So I took the plunge and got the Ipad 2.

ASUS A53U-EH11 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Mocha)

I bought this laptop to replace my old Dell and I love it! It boots in around 20-30 seconds and is really fast in High Performance mode. It can even run Starcraft 2 with no problems. For the people that say it's slow, have you looked to see what mode it's in? It has 4 operating modes. High Performance, Entertainment, Quiet Office, and Battery Saver mode. It comes with Battery Saver mode on default so make sure to change it. If your looking for a really good laptop for a fair price then this is the one to get.

This review is not going to be extremely in-depth, because I bought this computer for my dad for Christmas and only used it for about 2 days to get everything set up on it. Side note: My personal computers are Macs, but I am not extremely biased on operating systems, and I think Windows did a good job with 7. That being said, here is my initial impression on the computer.

The shipment of the laptop was quick and free (thanks Amazon Prime)! Packaging was minimum, but definitely secured and padded the laptop, which is a bonus in my eyes.

Upon opening the packaging, the computer looked sleek. It seemed like it was made not as study as a MacBook Pro (my Mac side showing), but it also wasn't cheaply made. It's made with plastic, which allows for it to be lighter and hopefully more durable.

Windows 7 Home Premium came with it, which is a nice upgrade from the basic, but it came loaded with all the Asus add-ons and slowed down the performance greatly. On start-up, the computer was using about ~65-70% of the memory performance. There was A LOT of programs running that was bogging down the performance. The very first thing I did was install a fresh copy of Windows 7 Home Premium and wiped the hard drive of all the nasty programs. The Windows 7 disc didn't come with the computer, so it may help to have a friend that has a physical disc and you can just load your OEM Windows key that came with the computer (on the box).

Once a fresh Windows 7 was installed, the computer ran like a dream. It is mainly being used for web surfing and light office work. I haven't received a call with any problems with it, so it's holding up!

If you are looking for a high-performing laptop for gaming or other CPU-intensive tasks, this obviously isn't the best choice computer for you. But for daily web browsing, word processing and less demanding CPU/GPU tasks, I recommend this laptop!

I highly recommend installing a fresh Windows 7 as soon as you pull it out of the box, and of course use protection! Windows has free software that works great for personal computers. You can't go wrong.
