HP Mini 210-4150NR 10.1-Inch Netbook (Charcoal Gray)

I've owned several netbooks and this one is superior by far. It's hard drive space is impressively huge. The keyboard is easy to use and they way the keys are is great, doesn't look like crumbs or dust could get down inside it. The OS is zippy with all the bells and whistles.

Many people originally saw the netbook as a travel PC, a supplement to a desktop or even a cheaper alternative to the iPad. Allow me to suggest that this machine is really (in my opinion) better than that. I've decided that this machine will be my main PC and replace my HUGE laptop. Yes, you need to purchase an external CD drive and yes you will need to get accustomed to typing on a smaller keyboard and yes you will need to adjust to a smaller screen but there is very little that this machine cannot do so why not? There's 3x's the hard drive space on this machine than there is on my regular laptop. Why do you really need to have a cd drive? I have a portable one and I take it with me if I need to use it but I can live without it for day to day purposes. Anyway, it's just my opinion but there's no reason to have any other kind of PC. :)

I was deciding between a larger laptop and the mini as I was told there were some drawbacks with the small one, but I can tell you, I am so happy I purchased this unit. You must change the Ram from 1gb to 2gb and then it will be great. 1gb is too slow. I just love this lap for traveling. Skype, Google talk, e mail, even movies work just great. If you are thinking about a mini lap, get this one. it has a better processor, better sound.

I purchased this netbook for my husband approximately a month ago. He was happy about the size, because he needed something small and light enough to carry to school. I have used this netbook a few times and it is eztremely slow! it takes a long while to start after powering up and it also takes a long time to open any documents or to get on the internet or todo anything. I should have taken heed of the reviews before purchasing!

I had a Toshiba netbook for four years and loved it so much that I used it as my main laptop. I bought this one after the screen on my Toshiba went out and could not have made a worse decision. It is super slow and the touchpad for the mouse was horrible, it made working on it 10 times harder than on my Toshiba. The touchpad didn't do anything I tried to make it do even after adjusting all of the settings over and over again. It was also really really show, even after deleting programs and taking all necessary steps to speed it up, don't wait your money. Go with an Asus or a Toshiba nb305, which is what I got to replace it and I love it, no problems whatsoever, works unbelievably faster and the keyboard and touchpad are comparable to a full-size laptop making it easy to work on.

ASUS G75VW-AS71 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black)

I'm not a super gaming computer geek, but i know computers well and am an avid console gamer. I like playing fighting games like SFIV and the like and I also love first person shooters, action games, etc. Well so far I am VERY impressed with this behemouth of a machine! Not that street fighter is the most graphically intensive game, but i was coming from runing on my macbook pro under bootcamp with windows 7. Night and day difference. I can crank up all the settings including 8x antialiasing and the frame rate is stunning. no lag whatsoever. full screen full resolution all the bells and whistles enabled. Just Cause 2 i couldn't get the same with everything maxed out, but you probably would need a higher end machine to do that. With everything maxed out i was getting like 20fps but when i turned off the GPU water effect and toned down a couple other things i was getting a solid 60fps on the in game benchmark tests. Batman arkham asylum and the newer arkham city look positively stunning and smooooooth. The picture is great on this machine and the sound is quite good especially with the subwoofer. The power supply practically needs it own carrying case! Seriously this is the biggest brick i've ever seen on a notebook. The keyboard is very nice as is the track pad. the buttons on the trackpad have quite a bit of travel and feel kind of soft, but not mushy. The track pad also supports two finger rotation and pinch to zoom and 2 finger scrolling and 3 finger aero conrol of the windows 7 windows ala macbook (although it's nowhere near as smooth as the mac, but i didn't get this machine for smooth window navigation). I LOVE the rubberized feel of the plastic of the case. I also love that the machine doesn't come with 100 pieces of "bloatware"
the 750gb hard drivecomes partitioned with about 300 (drive c) for OS and other programs and then a drive D (presumably for your gaming data) is about 400gb. There is still an open expansion bay for another hard drive I believe. Now remember, this is kind of the "bottom of the line" G75 with the 2gb graphics card (the 660) and the processors on the higher end units run a bit faster. So far the machine stays quite cool and it not even as noisey as my macbook pro (and not nearly as hot, you could make toast on my macbook when i was runing games in bootcamp). I don't know a lot about gaming machines but i've read that you can't just look at the graphics card or the processor but you have to look at everything together including how well the machine can cool itself because that can affect how well the gpu runs. I'm sure there are faster notebooks out there, but for 1500 bucks I am beside myself. I use an xbox 360 wireless controller and it works flawlessly, just make sure you download the 64bit driver from microsoft. For steam users, install it to the larger partition (the D drive). There is plenty of room on the 400gb partition. Even if every game you use is 10gb (which they usually are not) That's a lot of games with no external drive and you still have the C partition to store files on, plus you can always get another drive installed. I'm giving it 4 stars just to be conservative, but so far the only thing that's a bit off-putting is it's sheer size. it's much deeper than my 17 inch macbook and won't even fit (width-wise) into the sleeve of my 17inch backpack although it barely fits the length. I had to order an alienware backpack that accomodates the larger machines with the 17.3 screens. I travel A LOT and it is going to be really fantastic to have a complete gaming library with me wherever I go! Unless you're an uber-geek I would highly recommend this unit. Im sure it will do me for several years, but then again, technology is such that you're constantly kicking yourself for not waiting for the next better, faster, quieter, cooler, more power efficient thing to come along.

Toshiba Portégé R835-P94 13.3-Inch Laptop (Magnesium Blue)

I haven't had this one very long, but after installing some high end programs (Adobe CS-5 suite, Corel Draw X5, Video Studio pro, and MS Office) and running them, I am very pleased with the results. No problems at all installing or running the programs. I loaded and edited eight high res photos in Photoshop with no problems. The small screen doesn't give me the view or capabilities of my 25" monitor & desktop computer, and I would not like to do any serious graphic design work on the Toshiba, but for what it was intended for, it does very well.

If you would like to see more reviews on the Toshiba R835-P94, look at the Toshiba R835-P81, it is the same computer except the P94 also has Bluetooth and is over $100 cheaper. The P94 is an Amazon exclusive, which probably accounts for the lower price. The P81 comes with 6 GB of ram while the P94 only has 4 GB. The 4 GB of ram is fine for most applications and most users, but I like to max-out my ram. I bought two 4 GB high speed ram modules (a total of 8 GBs) for $46 and the P94 is noticeably faster. Installation of the ram is very easy.

A real shocker was discovering that the battery power lasts almost as long as advertised. Amazing! I have never had a laptop that even came close to this one.

I'm not a "gamer" so I can't speak to its capabilities in that arena, but I have watched streaming movies, and DVD's with no problems. The only negative things that I have noticed so far are that it has a narrow vertical viewing angle. I'm comparing it to my old Sony Vaio which has a larger and very good screen. The other negative is the ton of bloat ware programs that Toshiba loads on the computer. I doubt that you will ever use the majority of them. Sadly, it seems that all of the manufacturers are doing this now.

Overall, the Toshiba R835-P94 is very good computer for the price. Small, light weight and good power.

I had this one for about ten days and I must said it fulfills my expectations. It has capability of "normal size" laptop but it is very light so could be squeezed in ultrabook group. Battery life is very good but defiantly not as declared 9 hours it is more like 6:30 - 7:00 hours. Screen is not in the top of the class but is defiantly good enough, keyboard is excellent, and connectors are on the right places. There are lots of Toshiba bloatware and I will uninstall it as soon as possible. I also bought additional 4 GB of memory because 4 GB memory shared with graphic card is a little bit on the edge and 6GB or even better 8GB really make difference.
No backlit keyboard is the only thing I miss but you have to make some sacrifice because there is no better laptop for this price.

Acer Aspire One AO722-0825 11.6-Inch Netbook (Black)

After looking closely at a 10" Android tablet (as well as my wife's iPad), I decided that despite predictions of the death of netbooks, a light, compact, real computer was just what I needed. "Netbook" is a misnomer for a machine like this one, which doesn't depend on using web applications. It runs Windows Home Premium (meaning any application most of us run) and has the muscle to do it, including the 4 GB of RAM (my previous netbook came with 1 GB, but ran Windows fine on 2). It's plenty speedy, the screen is bright and beautiful, unlike a lot of netbooks it has a full-sized keyboard (YAY), and, the key thing for me, it remains very light even though the screen is bigger than an iPad or the equivalent. (I liked my previous netbook a lot, but the 10-inch screen was just a little too limiting.) I could easily have spent three times as much for an "ultrabook" without much additional benefit. My old, full-sized, and still excellent laptop is now a media server. Trading down from 7 or 8 pounds to 3 and gaining a few hours' battery life makes all the difference in the world. No Bluetooth, but that was a tiny sacrifice for me.

No, of course you don't get speakers worth a damn, but there is an easy and inexpensive solution. Try this Logitech unit that clips to the frame of the screen and draws power directly from the netbook via USB. You'll be amazed at the robust sound your little machine puts out!

This is a really small computer but it does pack a punch. I have only had it for a few months, so it may just be the new pc standard, but the computer does not heat up, and does not freeze. I use primarily for internet access and video streaming, and the hdmi input helps. For a "netbook," this has a decent hardrive, great processor and nice memory. Would definitely recommend.

I was first hoping to get a tablet, but ended up deciding on this. I am so glad I did. It is fully loaded and really lightweight. It has the latest operating system, so unlike a tablet, you can do everything you would do on a regular desktop pc. The only thing is, you would need an external usb cd/dvd drive if you are going to be using cds. Other than that, this is really an amazing pc for the price.

This is one of the best electronic purchases I ever made. The processing speed is not as fast as the other computer, a Sony VAIO with an i5 processor but the video performance, especially an 1080p output to the TV with HDMI connection, is as good as the other computer. I can use this netbook for most everything. Since the power supply has died on the other computer, I have been using this computer for everything. I have not felt a limitation on it yet, since I mostly do email and other light-duty applications. This is the least I spent on a computer and it is light-weight, and has SD card reader, which is very handy for travels. I certainly recommend this product.

HP TouchPad Wi-Fi 32 GB 9.7-Inch Tablet Computer

Purchased this version the day they came out, have been hard pressed to put it down since then! Some thoughts:

1. The battery life is awesome! 6.5 hours of continuous heavy use only used up 65% of my battery!
2. You get the real web, flash actually plays remarkably well. You can just play videos straight on youtube, are able to click links in them etc. Not a huge fan of flash, but it is everywhere!
3. If you are familiar with webOS, the operating system on the TouchPad, you know how awesome the mutli-tasking is, widely held to be best mobile interface in that regards, and it really shines on this beautiful large screen.
4. As a retailer rep at a big electronic store commented after I showed "it does so much for you" and unlike his phone/pad on the TouchPad you dont have to figure out which app to use, go find it, launch it, & then start typing, on here you just start typing what you are thinking then choose the app to finish it with in an easy list (email, fb, twitter, memo, calendar, and the list goes on!).
5. Although it does have a limited number of apps compared to the tablet market leader, it has many of the important ones, and most are outstanding quality with very few ads to be seen! The main thing to remember is you dont need an app for a whole lot of things, you have the real web just like on a computer! Imagine if you had to go find app for each website you wanted to visit on your computer, nuts right? This works like your computer, apps when you want them, the real web the rest of the time.
6. Your accounts are tied right into the tablet, and you can access everything from one place... You can chat on google, skype, aim, yahoo, etc. (even sms with a new HP webOS phone) all from the same place built right into the messaging app. Email is the same way & is the best email interface I have ever seen, and I am excited to have it on my computer next year when HP starts putting webOS on every PC they sell (some time of window you can run webOS apps in most likely).
7. Love video skyping on this!
8. Could it have a rear camera, sure, doubt I would use it much (thats what my smartphone &/ camera is for) especially if it is a poor quality camera like the leading device.
9. I could go on and on (so could my wife who is trying hard to win one currently for herself, and my kids who are jn love with coloring games, air hockey, and of course ANGRY BIRDS HD!) If you are wanting to get a tablet, start here, if you dont like it, return & switch to another platform, but this is one you really need to try for a bit!

Apple MacBook Air MC968LL/A 11.6-Inch Laptop (NEWEST VERSION)

I usually only write reviews when a product is either really really good, or really really bad. The Macbook Air is certainly the former. I picked this up on Amazon over Black Friday weekend for $849, and I consider it possibly the best money I've ever spent on a piece of electronic equipment. I'm not an "Apple" guy, and I don't buy simply for brand cache. I bought this because I think the iPad is overpriced for what you get, and was looking for something that was functional and portable. I was not disappointed. With the lid closed it's virtually the same footprint as the iPad, and about a pound heavier. I would imagine it would fit easily in a woman's purse. It is also blazingly fast. By far and away the fastest computer I have ever used. I was a little concerned about only having 2GB of RAM, but it seems to have no impact at all. Startup and shutdown are virtually instantaneous. Apps load immediately. Completely unlike your typical computing experience. Outside of the speed and portability, they keyboard, touchpad, and build quality are spot on. Again, probably the best I've ever used on a laptop.

There's really not a lot to dislike, but here are the things I've found. First, there's a shortage of ports. On many of the competing Ultrabooks that have been recently, you simply get more options to connect. Secondly, the battery life isn't great. It's OK, and will get you a few hours of extensive use, but I haven't gotten close to the 6+ hours Apple quotes. Finally, the memory and storage could be an issue for some users. I don't run many programs at once, and most of my documents are stored in a cloud, so these two items aren't a huge deal for me, but it's something to consider if you are a more intensive user.

In short, I think I got a steal. A 64GB iPad and keyboard will run you about $800, and will not give you nearly the capability that the Air has. The competing Ultrabooks aren't much cheaper, and won't give you the build quality and friendly ergonomics that the Air offers. I'm not a fan of all Apple products, but think they hit a home run here. It's honestly a little astonishing to me that the Air has not become more popular than it is.

HP g6-1d60us (15.6-Inch Screen) Laptop

setup took less than 5 minutes and from the point where you turn on the laptop to where you are logged in and able to get on the internet is less than 30 seconds... it has an amazing graphics card with a 6.0 rating on the windows index rating.... it has a base score of a 4.5 which for Aero graphics... for windows 7... i was lead to believe by some of the photos that it had a blu-ray drive... but sadly it does not... it can still burn dvd's and cd's so i am okay with that... This is a very good laptop for its price... and it does not feel cheap at all.. i bought a desktop computer for 800 dollars 3 years ago, my desktop still has a better processor, but this laptop beats the socks off my desktop when it comes to graphics... it can play a lot of the newest games like Battlefield 3 and modern warfare 3 :D! i think the only downside somewhat is the screen, it is not as High Def as i want it to be... my Desktop Dell Inspiron One 19 is still better when it comes to screen quality... and i am always amazed when i watch full screen on it, but for this laptop, the quality is very good, but the colors dont seem to be as vibrant as my desktops... you can sort of fix it by messing with contrast, brightness and color under the display setting in the control panel... but if you like to play games, or even want this for school work or business... i will recommend this laptop, it can install Microsoft Office 2010 out of the box as long as you have a trial key... and so far i am loving it :D! runs great and fast.... And for the speakers, they are louder than my desktops, but of course they dont have a good base, so i still use my trusty headphones to listen to my songs... but it is always fun to unplug my laptop and let my friends listen to the music as well, mainly because it sounds pretty good :) if there are any questions please feel free to ask and i will try to answer them.

I ordered this laptop after I cracked the screen on my other HP. I am absolutely in love with it. Has Windows 7, has HDMI and VGA outputs so I can connect my laptop to the TV. Keyboard is awesome, keys do not stick and they are space perfectly apart. Scroll pad is awesome as well, doesn't lag and moves as fast as my finger does. Great graphics, I am not a gamer or anything, I use this for my homework, and it exceeds every requirement I have. LOUD speakers. Comes with SRS speakers, crystal clear sound! Battery life is excellent, considering my old laptop would only last about 30 minutes unplugged. This one last about 4 hours. VERY FAST delivery, got it in two days. Never runs hot, and starts up soooo fast. Set up was super easy as well. I would recommend this laptop to any college student. As long as your not using this to play WOW or other large online games then this is the laptop for you. Absolutely no complaints here. HP computer just keep getting better and better!

Apple iPad MD329LL/A (32GB, Wi-Fi, White) NEWEST MODEL

I was able to secure the new iPad at our local Apple store this morning, as ours wasn't too busy, but I also got to spend a little time with a review model beforehand. In any case, I'll take you hands-on with the new model, plus I'll share my experience from my past two years of iPad ownership altogether, especially for those who haven't yet had an iPad to call their own. I'll also reveal a treasure trove of info on how you can legitimately download tons of quality apps and games for free, in hopes of making this the most helpful iPad review on Amazon!

My review tends to run long, so I've organized information by section, with headings, to make it more helpful for those just looking for specific info. For example, see the heading "Downloading Apps and Games" for the info on obtaining free apps and games!

First, let's quickly cover what's new, and what each means for you:
+ Retina Display - twice the resolution of the iPad 2, at 2048 x 1536 pixels (264px/in)
+ 5 megapixel rear-facing camera - take photos with over 8x higher resolution and quality than the iPad 2 (but still no flash)
+ Dual-core 1GHz A5X processor with quad-core graphics - better multitasking and flawless high-res graphics performance
+ 4G LTE capable - faster mobile connections on AT&T and Verizon when in 4G-LTE-covered network area

If you're considering the now-cheaper iPad 2, here's a quick recap of what was new last year:
+ Dual-core 1GHz A5 Processor - better multitasking, 9-times faster graphics
+ 3-Axis Gyroscope - allows for higher precision and more motion gestures
+ Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound pass-through with Apple Digital AV Adapter (sold separately)
+ Rear-facing camera - supports 960 x 720 sized photos (0.6 megapixels), plus 720p HD videos
+ Front-facing VGA-quality camera - VGA-quality is a resolution of 640 x 480 (0.3 megapixels)
+ Verizon 3G model now available - no longer limited to just AT&T for the WiFi+3G model
+ Thinner, lighter and smoother with contoured back - feels more comfortable in your hands

The iPad 2 brought a lot more new features to the iPad lineup, but the 3rd generation iPad still brings us some welcome new features. First, it sports the new A5X processor. Don't be confused though, it's not really that much better than the iPad 2's, and it's not technically a quad-core processor. The CPU itself remains dual-core, but the graphics processor built-into the CPU chip can compute 4 streams of graphics information, thus making the graphics aspect of the A5X processor quad-core. It's confusing, I know. To be honest, there was no noticeable improvement in performance over the iPad 2, except maybe behind the scenes where it handles 4x more pixels. In general, everything on the new iPad runs just as smooth as it always has, which is as to be expected from Apple! But I imagine the new processor has particularly been used to speed up image processing for the new 5 megapixel camera, making photography just about as snappy as it is on the iPhone 4S, which I own as well. 4G support was also a nice surprise that had been rumored.

Dell Inspiron i14RN-1227BK 14-Inch Laptop (Diamond Black)

At this price, this machine is a steal. It has the capability of a full-fledged computer and the convenience of an extremely portable laptop. At just over 5 lbs. it's certainly heavier than a tablet, a Macbook Air or an ultrabook, but then again it has all the advantages of a "real" computer. Responsiveness is outstanding since Windows 7 is a great OS, certainly when compared to Vista. Even compared to Apple's OS X, Windows 7 performs quite well, although it is of course much more "labor intensive", which is another way of saying that it's not quite as user friendly. On the plus side, it provides what is possibly the most widely used software platform in the world. All in all you can't go wrong with this device if you are looking for something that provides heavy lifting computing power as compared to a tablet or even an ultrabook.

Bought one of these a few weeks ago to use for a sports club I administer. Needed a simple machine to do basic tasks- e-mail, web browsing, word processor....and to run a sports meet software. Great machine for these basis tasks. Price point is super, cheaper than many tablets or even in some cases a cell phone, and much more capable. Tested WiFi in an area where most cell phones and computers have trouble with weak signal, and this works great. Runs cool, battery life even with the basic battery is good, and weight is light enough to make it easily used on a...laptop. HDMI output is great, I hooked this up to my projector with no issues. Connectivity options for USB, HDMI, eSATA great for this price range. Overall this is a great price on a premium brand laptop with super solid features.

I am delighted with this purchase. I use it for business about 12 hours every day of the week. Staples had these on sale for $449 and was giving a $100 Visa card rebate with every purchase, so I could not resist the sub $400 price.

Pros: The PC is fast and reliable. Boot time and wake up time is *much* faster than my old Compaq Vista. Win7 is a much faster and user-friendly OS than Vista or XP. 6 Gig of memory on this laptop ensures the applications run smoothly and seamlessly with many windows open at once. The laptop is relatively small and light yet has pretty much all the features of a powerful desktop. Keypad feels very nicely when you are typing. The trackpad has some neat new features and is very adjustable. Machine automatically shuts off the trackpad when you plug in a mouse.

Cons: Battery only lasts 3 hrs if you are using the machine. It says 6 hrs when you mouse over the battery icon when fully charged. Also the ports are not labeled on the edges of the typing surface of the machine so you have to crane your neck to find the locations of the USB ports or the power jack if you are trying to connect something.

Apple MacBook Air MC969LL/A 11.6-Inch Laptop (NEWEST VERSION)

Programs launch fast, and I have yet to experience any system lag or slow-down; I did a test by running the following programs simultaneously: Adobe Photoshop CS5, Adobe Dreamweaver CS5, Microsoft Excel, iTunes, Google Earth, Google Chrome and VLC Player. I had documents open in each Adobe/Microsoft program, music playing in iTunes, a sample movie playing on VLC, and streaming video in Chrome while I used Google Earth - and the MacBook Air didn't even flinch. I could switch from program to program and there was no slow-down whatsoever. Being a primarily Windows guy for the better part of 15 years, this was refreshing.

USER INTERFACE
I remember trying to use a Windows netbook once and absolutely hated it - the keys felt cheap, the layout felt cramped, and response was sporadic. I was initially concerned that the 11" MacBook Air keyboard would feel the same, but when they say "full-sized keyboard" they mean it. I can type just as fast on the MacBook Air as I can on a regular desktop keyboard. The spacing of the keys, and more importantly the feel of the keys, is excellent. The latest MacBook Air's (mid-2011+) have a lighted keyboard (which mine does) and they implemented it perfectly. I like the fact that you can set the keyboard lighting to a comfortable brightness, and then OSX will automatically adjust the brightness compared to ambient light automatically.

Being a Windows user I was also wondering if I would be able to use Apples "single button track pad" but you know what? It only took me an hour or two to get used to using the track pad and OSX's very useful multi-touch gestures. One thing that caught my eye about the track pad - it's very precise. In Adobe Photoshop I can control the cursor with precision that I could only match with a mouse on a Windows machine. My previous Windows laptops' track pads pale in comparison, so much that I would always factor in a wireless mouse into the budget when buying a Windows computer.

EXTRAORDINARY SCREEN
For being only 11" in size, the MacBook Air's screen is amazing. Initially I thought I'd have something similar to a Windows Netbook due to the size similarities, but the MacBook Air's display is more comparable to my previous 15.6" 1080 HD laptop. Type is crisp, and the only time you'll realize that you're working with a smaller screen is if you run programs that use fixed-size pallets.

EXCELLENT BATTERY LIFE
With normal usage (web browsing, mail, some YouTube visits, etc.) I get around 5.5-6 hours in between charges. When I have to use Adobe CS that drops down to around 4.5 hours from my experience. It's weird not having to plug the AC adaptor into the MacBook Air every night before I sleep (which is what I used to do with my Windows computer.)

THE LOOK AND FEEL OF QUALITY
From its aluminum unibody to the texture of the keyboard keys to the responsiveness and precision of the track pad, you know that the MacBook Air is a high-quality product. Nothing feels cheap - from the way the screen hinge moves to the fact that every external port is machined into the aluminum body, not a plastic faceplate. Even the Magsafe power connector snaps into place with a convincing click. There is no Windows laptop this size that I've ever seen that can match the quality that the MacBook Air possesses - and believe me, I shopped around A LOT for a Windows laptop before I chose the MacBook Air. Did I forget to say that the MacBook Air looks beautiful? Well it does.

MOTOROLA XOOM Android Tablet (10.1-Inch, 32GB, Wi-Fi)

With my new excitement at not requiring my computer to use my tablet I headed over to an Android App development forum. Here developers had posted lots of cool apps that were in beta or that they wanted to promote. On competing devices the only way to get an app is through the sanctioned and controlled portal, not so on Android (and thus Xoom). Using the Xoom browser I bounced around the forum, I downloaded beta apps, and then I was able to easily install them. Again, this is all on the device, and these were not approved apps, awesome.

Another example of something that impressed me came on my third day with the device. I was using the CNN app (which is free and tablet optimized, go check it out) and I watched a video of a story that I thought was really interesting, but it was one of those that is only a teaser, and the rest is on another site. When I hit these videos on my iPad I just have to try to remember to watch them later on a computer, because they are inevitably flash based. Not so on the Xoom, I typed in the address, the flash loaded up perfectly, and I was watching the video in full screen with no trouble.

This process of growing more comfortable with the device and learning what it could do continued over the last few days. At every turn I would find something amazing that just wasn't possible on competing tablets. I discovered the glory of widgets (custom little desktop things to show you the weather, or news, or whatever). I found some live wallpaper (moving animated wallpaper, that can change and adapt to things, such as the weather). I just kept finding new awesome features and uses.

One thing I want to touch on that is perhaps more technical than the rest of my review is the screen. I use my tablets to read, I started using ebooks a while back and I found tablets to work pretty well for that. I do most of my reading at night before bed, so the backlit screen is actually helpful versus a traditional reader. Anyway, one of the things that has always bothered me about the iPad as an ereader is that the pixel density (that is the number of pixels (or square blocks of color) in each inch of screen space) is very low. The iPad has somewhere around 130PPI (pixels per inch). It was so low that it really did give me noticeable eye strain to read on the device, I could see the pixels, and it really just wasn't a great reading experience. This was so pronounced that for the last few months I had actually been doing most of my reading on a 4th generation iPod Touch. It had a smaller screen, but a higher pixel density.

Anyway, the Xoom has a very noticeable increase in resolution and pixel density. With its higher resolution it has roughly 33% more pixels than the iPad, roughly 300,000 additional pixels. This is something you can see immediately when looking at any text. It is a lot smoother and easier to read on the Xoom. However, the other side of this is that the iPad has a different display type, that does have better viewing angles and color/contrast. In my case I don't really care, I find the pixel density to be 1000 times more important than small color improvements or viewing angles but I feel I should mention it.

ASUS N53SM-ES72 15.6-Inch Laptop (Silver Aluminum)

It's important to note the Intel i7-2670QM supports 16GB RAM (32GB with Windows Pro/Ult upgrade) but not all configurations will have all 4 ram slots. For example the Asus N55 series uses the Intel i7-2670QM but only has 2 slots for a max of 8GB RAM. Other manufactures do this too. I just wanted to caution those thinking if it has the Intel 2670QM that you would automatically have 4 ram slots. That is what makes this N53SM such a great value.

Before I powered it on I installed 16GB 1600MHz matched ram. I ditched the 4 GB stick and 2 GB stick of Hynix ram. Technically you could just add 2 4GB sticks in the empty slots for a total of 14 GB but that would give you a mixed set and not really ideal. Since RAM is pretty cheap these days you can add 16GB matched set for under 90 dollars. I remember just a couple years ago when this much RAM would set you back 1,500$.

Asus builds a pretty good product. The hardware is impressive while the design and execution is sexy, functional and economical. Now comes the cost savings. More plasticky then I would have liked. Plastic frame adds to weight but keeps cost down I'm sure. With edge to edge screens now and small components would have liked to see a more compact architecture. It feels like it should be a 17 inch laptop. Keyboard is adequate, (non lighted), and mouse pad not as slick as my Asus 13 inch model. Weight is on the higher end of the spectrum for this size laptop, 6.4 lbs by itself and over 8 lbs with ac adapter. It can get very tiring if you have it actually sitting in your lap on a couch. Also don't plan on lugging this brick all over campus unless you have arms of steel, speaking of which the power brick is almost the same size as the laptop (huge!--which you will need to carry with you at all times as you wont get more than 3 hours of unplugged life from the battery. Heat management is good, the top and bottom don't get overly hot after long usage. Sound is what you would expect from a company like B&O which is simply amazing for a laptop. However, don't expect this to scream like a 600 watt B&O system. I see some reviewers say it's not loud enough. Remember this is a laptop with two 1 inch speakers. The sound is deep, clear and well balanced for a 15.6 inch laptop.

I look at my purchase as an investment in longevity. The Asus N53SM replaced 2 year old Alienware M17 that set me back 4 grand and didn't even come close to these specs. The Asus N53SM with i7 quad core and 16GB ram was less than a grand. My intended use is photo and video editing. I expect the hardware to be suitable for the long run as more advanced graphic, ram and processor hungry apps hit the market. For high end gaming I think it definitely kicks for a middle of the road GPU and even though Asus doesn't allow upgradable graphic cards like alienware and other models, you save hundreds even thousands over those models.

Apple iPad MC706LL/A (32GB, Wi-Fi, Black) NEWEST MODEL

Naturally, there are things you can do with the iPad right out of the box. You can browse the Web with Safari, set up your email, download your photos and videos to your iPad via iTunes, as well as shoot new photos and videos using either of the two built in cameras. You can also surf YouTube and watch your favorite videos via Apple's built-in YouTube app. There's also an iPod built in, so you can listen to your favorite tunes via the Music app, or download new music via the iTunes app. Another popular iPad app is iBooks, which lets you download and read e-books on your iPad. You can also jot notes, manage your calendar and contacts. You can even chat with other Apple-device users via FaceTime (over WiFi only). Of course, the fun and usefulness of the iPad doesn't stop there. The App Store app is your portal to unending games and utilities. One thing Apple has been really good at is showing off just what you can do with the iPad. App developers have undoubtedly been busy creating unique experiences through their iPad apps, most of which have yet to be rivaled by (or ported to) Android and other tablets.

You can also download two additional Apple-made apps: iBooks, which lets you download and read ebooks easily on your device, and iWork, Apple's office-document editing suite, a trilogy of apps which consists of: Pages (for editing word processing documents), Numbers (for editing spreadsheets) and Keynote (for editing PowerPoint-like slideshows); Each of the three apps can be downloaded separately for $9.99 each. Completely reworked for the iPad, the complete iWork suite will set you back a whole thirty bucks. So be aware of that before you go ahead and grab the iPad for use with work-related document editing, and so forth.

Also note that if you do intend to use the iPad for heavy writing or word-processing purposes, you'll find that your ability to type quickly will be greatly inhibited by the virtual keyboard. Thus, you should snag the external keyboard as well, but I'll explain a few typing techniques below. Either way, be prepared to pay more than merely the price for the iPad alone if you intend to transform the iPad into something a little more productive than it might be for you out of the box.

Apple iPad 2 MC980LL/A Tablet (32GB, Wifi, White) 2nd Generation

The addition of 2 cameras was expected. Some were a bit surprised to see the first generation released without the cameras. Whether it was for a price point consideration, or a means to get people to upgrade, Apple held off until iPad 2. The cameras do a reasonable job, but they're not going to replace a dedicated digital camera, or really even the camera on your phone for most still images. The cameras do a substantially better job with video, and FaceTime is probably one of the best reasons to get the iPad 2 over the original iPad. For those who might not be familiar, FaceTime is Apple's face to face conferencing system, kind of like Skype, or if you'd rather, kind of like the Jetson's TV/Phone. With the push of a button you can be having a face to face chat with a loved one just about anywhere in the world (provided they're on a wireless network at the time). FaceTime doesn't work over 3G natively (it can be used over a wifi connection created by a 3G device however) so you're not going to be able to use it in your car anytime soon. This is probably a good thing though. It is incredibly easy to use and if you know other people with an iPad 2, iPhone 4, or Mac it's a lot of fun.

Smart Covers aren't really "smart" but they're really very useful. Not only do they provide a stylistic enhancement of the device, but they serve a practical and functional purpose of doubling as a screen protector and stand in 2 configurations. You can find them in a variety of colors and from third market suppliers, and it's a safe bet that more will be out soon to capitalize on the magnetic sensors in the iPad 2. It's unfortunate that this same feature can't somehow be retrofitted to the iPad 1, I wouldn't have thought a case would be a compelling reason to consider a product over it's competitor, but these covers are really so useful it's hard to understand why they've not been there since the beginning.

Multitasking Support
One of the biggest knocks against the iPad when first released was the lack of native multi-tasking support. Jailbreakers added the feature quickly and Apple soon realized it would be a requirement for any future device's success and released an OS update that included the feature. The iPad 2 capitalizes on that progress and takes it a step further with the increased RAM enabling more open applications to be suspended at once, and the time to open or close an application has improved as well. That said, even the first generation managed to open and close apps faster than most people would be used to on their computers, so while this is an improvement it's more akin to showing off.

Apps
One thing that Apple has clearly the advantage in for the moment is app availability. The App store has close to 70,000 iPad specific Apps, all of which will work on the iPad 2. The new cameras will undoubtedly see this list expand rapidly, as will the inclusion of a gyroscope for gaming and motion based uses. There are also a substantial number of professional applications ranging from document creation to photo editing and vector drawing. Chances are if you can dream it, there's an App for that (and if not you might want to get started on one to fill in the gap). The Android market is making a strong showing, and ultimately it'll likely be a strong competitor, for now it still has a ways to go, but any potential buyer should consider the strength of the application market before buying a tablet.

If you're in the market for a tablet device the iPad 2 should definitely be on your short list. If you're uncertain it is always best to go and play with these things hands on first if you can. Best Buy is a good place for that, so are Verizon Stores since they have the Xoom and 3G iPad. Don't get pulled into the hype and mania that comes with an Apple release. They're exciting and new, and they're impressive enough to warrant some excitement, but it will die down and there will be other products that prove a strong competitor to the iPad 2. If you're looking for right now though, this is probably your best bet. I gave the device 4 stars, as I did the iPad 1. I did this in contemplation of the features offered by competitors that are absent from the iPad, most notably the requirement for adapters for USB/SD/HDMI. While these features are there, they aren't as convenient as in other tablets. With that in mind I firmly believe that the iPad more than makes up for this in usability, reliability, and design and in those areas far exceeds its current competitors.

HP Folio 13-1020US 13.3-Inch Ultrabook (Steel Gray)

What I was to learn is that you basically have many pretty good choices, but must make your decision based on anticipated usage and what size you are willing to put up with. Then there's the puny little solid state drives, long on performance (I upgraded my laptop to an expensive hybrid drive last year) but short on capacity. i looked on my 500 Gig VAIO and discovered I was only using about 250 (I keep most lesser-used photo and video files on a big external Seagate drive), and that's with a good deal of incidental duplication from the last upgrade. Still, the 70 gigs or so you have left on the ultrabook after loading the OS would fall quite a bit short eventually I reasoned, as I'd like to be able do an ad or site update should the need arise and would therefore require current photography and more recent ad files, in addition to the core Adobe CS4 software I swear by, loaded on the machine. Plus I am a part-time rocket scientist (hobby-level) so needed some of that stuff on it also.

I have been threatening to make the move back to Mac since abandoning that platform for price in 2004, so I did consider the Airbook. One chat session with Adobe however nuked that idea - I'd have to abandon my PC software if I were to get new OSX licenses, or spend another $1400 on CS5 for the Mac. That's right, Adobe wanted $1400 in fees if I wanted to run their design suite on a $999 Airbook. Adobe sucks.

This should give one some clarity - obviously I couldn't do all that with a Galaxy Tablet even though Adobe does now have Photoshop and such for tablets now so it is a possibility, but I'd have to fork out more cash for that as well. Rocksim however is Windows only (rocket design software). Be sure to consider these little whoppers or suffer the consequences!

So if you're deciding between a tablet or an ultrabook, whether or not you want your core productivity software on the little machine comes first. With these babies you can run most Windows software, unlike tablets, so they are far more flexible and for this reason may eventually emerge to dominate the tablet-portable category.

Now there's the issue of storage capacity. Few ultras have 256 gb of storage (see the Dell XPS), those that do are 25-40% more ($1299 Dell), although that is likely to change as the category evolves. If you go over 256 you are in hard drive (HDD) versus solid state drive (SSD) territory so performance would suffer somewhat, that's kind of heretical anyway. What to do?
