Sony VAIO T Series SVT13112FXS 13.3-Inch Ultrabook (Silver Mist)

This is a nice looking machine, suitable for home users and business types, but not for serious gamers due to its lacking a dedicated graphics processor. It is very solidly built, with no creaking or flexing, and feels very nice to the touch. The touchpad is responsive and has a full area click feature, with the right-hand lower corner reserved for right-clicks. A slight downside is that while clicking, the mouse sometimes drifts away slightly as you are still on the touch surface; I found tapping the touchpad more reliable.

The screen is bright and has good viewing angles for this type of device. The screen is glossy and not matte, so it can act like a mirror in bright environments. The resolution is also fine for a screen of this size. It is no retina display for sure as close inspection of letters reveals the step-like stagger of pixellation. However, the key word there is close: at the normal screen to eye distance the stagger is smoothed away naturally - not a deal breaker for me.

The webcam is great and produces good colour representation from what I have seen. I have not tried it in low light conditions yet. The microphone also picks up sound very well, so no shouting required.

The speakers are surprisingly good and completely hidden. My wife bought an albeit-cheap ($9), USB-powered pair of external speakers before she tried the laptop's and she really should not have bothered: the laptop outperformed them in every way.

Speaking of sound, then cooling fan is audible at full throttle, but is is acceptably quiet.

Ports-wise, this laptop is well-endowed, especially given its ultrabook form factor: LAN port, VGA, full HDMI, SD & Pro Duo card slot, headphone port, 1x USB 2.0, 1x USB 3.0 (also a sleeping-charge port for external devices).

The keyboard is clickless and has that nice resist and collapse feel, so no sponginess.

All of this for $800 is an absolute bargain frankly. If you plan on getting Windows 8, get Windows 7 Home Premium as Microsoft offers an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $15.

Sony VAIO E Series SVE14112FXW 14-Inch Laptop (Seafoam White)

Computer is very-light and the perfect size at 14". The back-lite keyboard is a nice feature, but it does not seem to distract or enhance much. I thought perhaps if you got the white version that might be problem, but I got black, so it's just a really cool cosmetic feature. Bootup time is really fast and impressive. Computer does not make any weird "processing" sounds. The speakers are on top (not the bottom), so there is no distortion of sound. The usb drives are all up front, so it would be nicer to have those in the back. It would also be nice to have a 10-key pad, but you really have to go up to a 15.6" for those, and those really are too big for me. Wish it had a micro sd slot instead of a pro duo slot, but it is a Sony. Processor and graphics are pretty good but not great. But not at all bad, and I upgraded from netbook, so I am really noticing and benefiting from the speed difference. Overall, I would recommend this computer. I think between a PC, 15.6", 13", and those netbooks, this size really gives you the best of everything that you are looking for including: a DVD drive, 6GB RAM (that's a lot), and a hard drive with well over 500 GB of storage (640GB to be exact), good graphics, i3 processor (of course i5 and i7 are better - but most people wouldn't even need that and many computers out of box come with much worse), without being too big or heavy. This is a really great value and design. Buy it with your Amazon credit card like I did and you save 3% on top of that!! Highly recommend this.

Samsung Series 5 NP550P5C-T01US 15" Laptop

I used the one day shipping and got it on Tuesday (i ordered it on Sunday so it shipped Monday and came Tuesday). the packaging was great and there were no marks or signs of abuse on the package or the product box inside the shipping box.

the screen is beautiful. The LED not only saves battery but makes every image on the screen pop. Even without 1080p resolution, it is an absolutely beautiful screen. i have not played any games yet so i have been able to use the NVIDEA graphics card yet, but i am sure those are more than adequate for the games i play.

the speakers are not exactly what i hoped for from JBL with a sub woofer. the sub woofer is about the same size, maybe even slightly smaller than the two 2w speakers. not much bass at all and not as crisp or clear as i would like, but they are extremely loud when the volume is high. this is nice because i can hear music throughout my entire room without having the volume all the way up. wish JBL and Samsung had spent some more time to add software to adjust the speakers sound (other than the audio software that comes with the sound processor, which is under par). Some custom JBL software would have been great.

The Keyboard is alright. i bought a wireless back lit keyboard with this laptop to go with he wireless mouse i already have so i don't use the keyboard much.i do wish the keyboard was back lit to but i guess they were saving money.

Everything above doesn't really matter to me (the speakers and the keyboard) because i use a wireless keyboard and most of the time my computer is plugged into my sound system which may be why the sound doesn't sound crisp to me. My sound system is extremely good so it has kind of spoiled me. Now for the two things that i much complain about that i do care about: the hard drive and the chassis.

ASUS A53U-EB11 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mocha)

The product is everything you could ask for and more, it's so simple to use, and such a great quality, for a pretty great price, the shipping came faster than I expected, and the product itself was more than I was looking for, I'm currently using this laptop for school, but you'll see you can use it for more than just school. It's really a great product, and I'm sure you'll have no doubts when you get it, just like I did. A great buy. Although one thing it doesn't come with Microsoft office, or any of the above, so you'll have to buy that, but other than that, it's a great and convinced product.

Purchased this for my sister, she needded a replacement for the school year and is a teacher. Long and short, I like the drop replacement warrenty for a year, since she has dropped a few.

I would have gone for a net book with the same processor, but she and I both have old eyes.

It seems well enough put together, a couple of things I would recomend. In order to get it to move, turn-off non-needed programs that run as services, these programs can be found using taskmgr and then disabling under Control Panel\System and Security\Administrative Tools "services" then add ram, or add a SSD or hybrid drive, These things fly under linux with correct drivers and also win8, which has been optimize for AMD CPU's. win 7 installed is somewhat pokey with bloatware, Or just reload with the rescue CD's they don't have the added programs. If you do some of the things outlined it should become alot better.

Toshiba Satellite S855-S5254 15.6-Inch Laptop (Ice Blue)

I bought this computer from Office Deopt at the beginning of August when they had an instant rebate on it for $699. The first one I got home with had numerous pixels stuck white, so I exchanged it for another. The second also had a single stuck pixel, so I made another trip to the store. This time I tried the 3rd. one out at the store before I left, and the screen was great.

I'm very pleased with this system. The i7 processor is very fast, and the system is pretty responsive, except for the slow HD (only 5400rpm). The graphics are the HD4000 version of the Intell intergrated graphic chipset (part of the Ivory Gate 3rd. Generation chipset) are now DirectX 11 compliant, and works quite well. You won't be playing games at high detail levels, but it works with a lot of them very well at reduced settings. I have been using it with Adobe Creative Suite CS 5.5, and it performs quite well.

I've only had it for a few weeks, so I hope it holds up well over time (it's the first Toshiba I've owned). There is a lot of bloatware that can be uninstalled which seem to speed up point.

My wife bought the i5 version of this laptop and it was perfect out of the box.

The only reason I gave it 4 and not 5 stars is due to having 2 factory sealed units with bad screens in a row. It made me question their quality control.

ASUS A53Z-AS61 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mocha)

Laptop feels solid, keypad feels very robust. I love that this model comes with usb3 support. I have no intention of running demanding 3d games on this laptop but it runs my productivity tasks very very well. the bloatware that comes with it slows it down so i will have to format this machine eventually. Overall, this is a great laptop, its quad core, 750 GB hard drive and the radeon graphics rns hd videos effortlessly. i highly recommend it.

Bought this for a friend, the 6520G graphics blows Intel HD 3000 out of the water. MW3 runs @720p no lag medium high settings. Tested NFS The Run (Frostbite 2 engine) works on medium low settings. Its not a gaming laptop but its excellent for the price. 750GB HDD is plenty of space. Steal of a deal for such a price. Build quality is solid.. looks great.. ASUS - enough said. Best laptop in its price range. 

I ordered this laptop and it was quite well packed in a huge box with massive amount of padding. Out of the box, it runs like a charm, fast and no issues whatsoever. It is NOT a gaming laptop, but you are able to play games on it like Starcraft 2 or league of legends on lower settings.

I've had the 16gb Thrive for 3 days now. The Thrive is in my opinion the best tablet available. The things that set it apart from other tablets are: Removable battery, Full size HDMI port, Full size USB 2.0 port as well as a mini USB port. All on board with no dock or adapters necessary. You can take your SD card right out of your camera and plug it in to the Thrive ( Handles up to 128 GB SDXC, what?!!) . Toshiba was smart enough to include a file manager that makes it super easy to move data or media between the tablet and SD card or external hard drive, etc. Running Honeycomb 3.1 right out of the box as well. The wifi is the best I have seen, better than any device in my house and I have a lot. Tethers to my Android phone with no problem. The audio is the best I have heard on a tablet.Toshiba worked with SRS and it shows. (One note, the default volume levels are low. Go into settings and adjust right away) The screen is better than the Xoom but not quite as good as the Samsung (in my opinion) and it seems to do better with higher quality and higher resolution content. Looks phenomenal when viewing pictures from my Canon Digital with an L lens. Color accuracy is excellent,not just oversaturated like some other tablets. The screen response is great. Ran a multitouch test and it recognizes 4 separate touch points simultaneously. 2mp front camera and 5 MP back camera are both very good with good lighting. All in all this tablet offers more interoperabilty than anything on the market. It charges really fast, 90% in 90 minutes. Very, very happy with my decision to go with the Thrive. I had considered the Asus but with the horrific build quality issues and lightbleed I decided against it. I am so glad I waited because Toshiba got it right, right out of the box! This thing is solid! No creaking or flex. No loose bezel. Zero lightbleed. A tablet is the sum of all its parts and in the words of Charlie Sheen, #Winning!

Update: 14 hrs today on the battery with fairly heavy surfing and some music and video. The battery gave me 6-7 hrs the first few charges. Wow, I didn't think it would improve this much! Really happy with the Thrive!

HP 2000-2a20nr 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

First of all, I'm no computer genius. I wanted a laptop that could run Reason which is a music program for producing drums and much more. I was told by two employees from different stores that this laptop would not be able to run it. This is bullshit. Works just fine. And for everyone else looking for a decent computer for cheap, buy it. Is it the fastest laptop? No but it's fast enough. I've had no issues with the internet. I've watched videos and downloaded music with no problems. Any customer service rep out there will tell you that you need the "holy shit" computer to do anything. I promise you that this isn't true. Hope this helps!

So far this is a lovely computer. The screen is full and clear and color is wonderful. The only thing I don't like is the keyboard, but I understand this is the way a laptop keyboard is and if I want I can buy a keyboard to plug in to get more the feel of a computer. It has been no trouble. It is up to date and has the programs I want. Its just great and faster than my desktop. I think it is wonderful for a backup as my desktop is getting some age on it.

Le Pan TC 970 9.7-Inch Multi-Touch LCD Google Android Tablet PC

The Le Pan TC970 is an excellent Android tablet, I am honestly thrilled with it. It's extremely responsive, never once did I have an issue with it slowing down no matter how many other things were going on. I'm thoroughly enjoying the TC970, and I think you will as well.

Aesthetically the TC970 is very pleasing and stylish looking, it's also thin and lightweight. The build quality is excellent, it's a solidly made tablet on par with those much more expensive.

I've had the pleasure of testing both the Motorola Xoom and the Samsung Galaxy Tab, and I have to say I like the Le Pan TC970 much better overall. The TC970 doesn't have a Tegra in it but from what I've seen it doesn't need it, it's more than capable a handling anything you can throw at it in terms of apps, games or videos or anything else. I was truly surprised that the 1Ghz CPU could handle everything I threw at it.

The most surprising or actually amazing thing is the battery life, no joke here I got over eight hours use while doing a mixture of playing games and browsing the web. I even left I on just sitting and overnight and still had battery left to use it.

The TC970 isn't without its problems though, but they're small and not deal breakers. I don't care for the Apple-like USB connection at all, I would have rather seen a standard micro-USB or even mini-USB connector. The screen is very glossy causing reflections in the correct light and after a few hours of use you'll find the accumulated fingerprints very annoying.

The built-in memory is rather small, yes you can put a larger microSD card in it but I would also like to see more built-in memory.

The build quality is excellent, but the back is rather slippery honestly, I would have liked it to be more rubberized of textured for a better grip.

Apple iPad (first generation) MB292LL/A Tablet (16GB, Wifi)

I have 2 iPads. A 64 GB WiFi only model which I bought the day it was available, and this 32GB 3G model which I picked up last week. They are about the same price; if you have to choose between an extra 32GB of storage and 3G capacity, definitely go with the 3G if for nothing else future proofing. I consider this to be the sweet spot of the 6 iPad variants.

Right now, my wife is in China with a WiFi only model. She is not a technical person, and can rarely find an open WiFi hotspot. So, she goes days between checking her e-mail. E-mail which might be critical to her business. If she had a 3G model, I could have purchased a modestly priced data plan from Chinese Unicom, modified a data SIM to a micro-SIM, and she would be getting her e-mail every minute, and doing some light web browsing. On the other hand, her iPad is loaded with media with over a dozen DVD quality films, all her music, and a large number of family photos. This does take advantage of the extra storage, but is a poor substitute for the whole Internet.

3G is not quite the great deal as it was yesterday, AT&T is eliminating unlimited data for new accounts. In the past, the deal was you could get unlimited data for $30/month with no contract. Now you can get a $25/month deal for 2GB, which is probably more than enough if you don't watch video. Existing $30/month users might as well be on contract, because they will have to keep paying to get the original deal. There are also cheaper smaller plans. Right now I'm on the unlimited plan, and it is great. I have been Skyping to my wife in China, using Google maps, browsing the web in the dentist office and at lunch. It is very slick. I tried the 250 MB/month plan and that was just too small for what I was doing.

As for the rest of the iPad, it is great. I downloaded a free novel from the iBooks store and read it comfortably without any eyestrain or hurting my arm. It's my preferred device for browsing the web, although you do get to notice the lack of Flash. It's mostly ads though so that's fine, but occasionally there will be a graph or video which you just can't see. Over time, I expect this will be less of a problem as Flash dies out, but it is mildly annoying now.

Samsung Series 5 NP530U3C-A01US 13.3-Inch Ultrabook (Light Titan)

This is my first Samsung computer and my first Ultrabook... I do a lot of traveling and I've been using a 10.1" Asus Netbook for the last two years. I've loved the battery life and accepted the speed and small screen as being the sacrifice that I had to make to get 8 hours on a battery charge. This Series 5 has a 13.3" screen that is very readable in most every situation with the possible exception of direct sunlight. The 1.7Ghz Core I5 processor is blazing fast for a portable computer and even rivals a lot of desktop systems. All of this comes with an actual battery life of over 8 hours!!!

I really considered not getting this computer when I read the review that talked about the screen shaking, I don't know if they got a bad unit or if they are sensitive to movement but I've used this computer on my lap, on an airplane and in a car and I can't say that my screen has ever moved enough to even get my attention much less bother me. I can't imagine another computer being any better match to what I need, a small, lightweight, long battery life computer with substantial processing power.

My only complaint so far has been Samsung Customer Service. I need to use this computer with a VGA projector and no one at Samsung could even tell me what adapter I needed to convert the monitor port to a VGA output. I ended up buying a HDMI to VGA converter to be safe. Their lack of knowledge about a basic function had me questioning my choice but the computer is so good I'm still going to give it five stars.

ASUS N56VZ-DS71 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

I just got this speed monster yesterday via Amazon from J&Rs. What can I say about the speed...it's fast...VERY fast. Anybody wavering on the edge over to go i7 3rd gen over a 2nd gen I say just do it. The extra $$$ is well spent IMO. I see somebody else has just added a full list of specs which until now was not listed on here. The ES model doesn't have a Blu-Ray ROM and I think comes with only 4Gb DDR3-1333 RAM and 1366x768 res screen but is available for about $200 less. So if you're on a tight budget that might be a better choice. But do yourself a favor and get to see the beautiful 1920x1080 screen on this one beforehand. It is really that nice and I believe it's an IPS screen. No dark patches and a wide viewing angle.

As with the previous reviewer the Hitachi 5400rpm HDD supplied is completely out of place in this system. After verifying everything worked I swapped it out with my 2yr old Intel 80GB X-25M SSD. WOW - now it becomes a totally different animal. Running Cinebench 11.5 the results are CPU test 6.25 and GPU 3D animation test was 43.03fps! That outperforms an earlier i7 960 chip running at 3.2Ghz. Cinebench claims 2.3Ghz for this (though maybe faster with Turbo Boost running). Boot time is now about 21 seconds from cold boot to Win 7 desktop screen.

While I don't do much gaming, this notebook can perform as one. Mostly it will be used for everyday web browsing, email etc. and photo/HD video editing. It handles my Sony a77 24MP images like they were 15yr old 500k GIFs LOL Instant. No waiting. Photoshop v7.0 opens up the fastest I've ever seen. I haven't yet installed Sony Vegas Pro 8 but I expect it to be quick too. A word on the graphics performance. The 3rd gen i7 Ivy bridge series now has an on-die Intel video chip included. So there are 2 graphics chips, this one and the 2Gb nVidia 650M. The Intel is used for run-of-the-mill performance applications and the 650M kicks in when needed. This is supposed to save battery power. Having not run any tests yet on that I can't comment. The battery is a 6 cell 5200mAh one.

One bad thing is the manual Asus supplied on the utilities CD/DVD. Nowhere does it mention the command to access the BIOS on cold boot. After some trial and error, I found it's the delete key. Why that isn't mentioned I don't know? Every other computer I've had over the years does (and I've had quite a few). One more thing to mention. On the supplied Win 7 HP install, you have to run the utility disk to get the Blu-Ray drive to read anything. Why that wasn't done as part of the factory install again I don't know? Despite the physical size which is typical for a 15.6", the weight is only 6lbs making it quite easy to carry. Most of the "gamer" spec notebooks seem to be heavier. The supplied subwoofer is a nice touch as it adds a bit extra bass end for the sound. Not quite Hi-Fi quality but better than the more usual tinny notebook sound.

Naturally, there are things you can do with the iPad right out of the box. You can browse the Web with Safari, set up your email, download your photos and videos to your iPad via iTunes, as well as shoot new photos and videos using either of the two built in cameras. You can also surf YouTube and watch your favorite videos via Apple's built-in YouTube app. There's also an iPod built in, so you can listen to your favorite tunes via the Music app, or download new music via the iTunes app. Another popular iPad app is iBooks, which lets you download and read e-books on your iPad. You can also jot notes, manage your calendar and contacts. You can even chat with other Apple-device users via FaceTime (over WiFi only). Of course, the fun and usefulness of the iPad doesn't stop there. The App Store app is your portal to unending games and utilities. One thing Apple has been really good at is showing off just what you can do with the iPad. App developers have undoubtedly been busy creating unique experiences through their iPad apps, most of which have yet to be rivaled by (or ported to) Android and other tablets.

You can also download two additional Apple-made apps: iBooks, which lets you download and read ebooks easily on your device, and iWork, Apple's office-document editing suite, a trilogy of apps which consists of: Pages (for editing word processing documents), Numbers (for editing spreadsheets) and Keynote (for editing PowerPoint-like slideshows); Each of the three apps can be downloaded separately for $9.99 each. Completely reworked for the iPad, the complete iWork suite will set you back a whole thirty bucks. So be aware of that before you go ahead and grab the iPad for use with work-related document editing, and so forth.

Also note that if you do intend to use the iPad for heavy writing or word-processing purposes, you'll find that your ability to type quickly will be greatly inhibited by the virtual keyboard. Thus, you should snag the external keyboard as well, but I'll explain a few typing techniques below. Either way, be prepared to pay more than merely the price for the iPad alone if you intend to transform the iPad into something a little more productive than it might be for you out of the box.
