People need to be aware that the reviews you see for the iPad often reflect the old Mac/PC platform wars with some people making comments who simply don't like iPads from a distance, without actually owning one, because they see it as part of the deplorable Apple mania they find so distasteful. They're entitled to their opinion, of course, but it is unfortunate they skew the evaluation of this product without the deep acquaintance one needs in order to give it an insightful evaluation.

I have taught computer science at the college level for 26 years and have had computers with all kinds of operating systems. I don't own Apple stock and have never known anyone who works at Apple. I therefore have no connection to Apple.

I have had my iPad for about a month and read a fair number of reviews before I purchased, spent some time using one at the store, and thought about what I might use one for, in contrast to my laptop with which I am well satisfied. People too often think of computers in terms of hardware, the specs and looks, instead of the software and the functionality. You should ask yourself, "What will I use this for that solves a problem I would like to have solved?" Software is always more important than hardware, even though it is the hardware that makes an impression.

The iPad is not a laptop and is not principally a production computer, that is, a computer on which you are going to develop web pages, do serious graphics editing, or write a book. You could use your new Taurus to tow a trailer, but that is not what it is designed to do well. These things can increasingly be done on an iPad, but I don't believe they will ever be what it is best at. It is a portable media machine with an inviting touch interface that requires a somewhat different set of skills, which take a modest amount of time to learn. Surfing the web, checking email, watching movies, playing games, looking at new cars, reading the Economist magazine, all work better on an iPad than a laptop. It does these things very well indeed. There are now 80,000 apps for a wide variety of activities--given its design intent. The apps are either free or reasonably priced, so you can get a bunch from the "app store" for little investment. As with Amazon, you can see what other people think of an app before getting one.

I am going to post a legitimate review about the actual product here. A few of the other reviews on this product were pretty much ranting and pointless. I am an IT technician, and I will sum it up as short as possible, but to the point. I bought this for my own personal use, not for work. All in all, this PC has great speed, good hibernation in and out of lid closes (hasn't locked up once yet), and fingerprint reader is actually very useful. Beats audio is marketing mostly, sounds a little better though. This PC is gorgeous aesthetically, and touchpad is useable for once. It has advanced functions (two finger zoom/scroll, etc.). Also, for those of you that don't like the touchpad light that surrounds the touchpad, (fn) function & spacebar toggles it on and off. Double tap the top left corner of the touchpad to turn it off and use a wireless mouse. Other than that, quad-core processor, 2 USB 3.0 ports and 2 USB 2.0 ports, pretty good graphics card, fingerprint reader with shortcut software included (you can setup different website shortcuts and/or system functions to access with recognition of different fingers; ie: shutdown with your pinky, or go to your 3 favorite websites with just one swipe of your index finger). It has 6 gigs of ram (expandable to 16 GB), 640 gig HDD, memory card reader, beats audio, and bluetooth, you really can't go wrong for the price. Remember, all PCs have bloatware these days pretty much, most PC support problems are dealt with through globally outsourced firms. This does suck, but it keeps their costs down for us to buy them. I suggest removing all the programs you don't want or need from add/remove programs in the control panel right away when you get it (within the 14 day store return policy), and give this computer a lot of use within that period to make sure it's for you. If you are not tech savvy, pay extra and purchase the store's extended warranty program. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS OR ANY COMPUTER 5 HOURS FROM YOUR HOUSE like one of the other reviewers did. Way too risky when spending 5 benjamins. Anyways, I hope you buy and enjoy this product. I do NOT work for HP by the way...lol. I will say that I did not buy this at Amazon unfortunately because I found it 120 bucks cheaper at a local chain store that starts with an (S******) and has a red brand theme. I would expose the store, but Amazon might not post this review. Last I looked, that deal was still going on. Hope this helps some people.

ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A-AB71 13.3-Inch Ultrabook - Amazon Exclusive

I ordered this Zenbook Prime UX31A-DB51 ultrabook from Amazon and received it promptly and in perfect condition this week. The i5 proc (newer "ivy bridge" model) has plenty of power for my use (and for almost any average use), and for what I'm using this for, I also don't need more than 128GB of storage, so I decided to go with this model instead of the DB72, which has the i7 proc and 256 SSD. I had been waiting for this upgraded Zenbook to come out for a little while, and Amazon was the 1st place I found that had it available, and I have usually had very good experiences purchasing through Amazon, so the negligible difference in price between Amazon's price and the suggested retail price wasn't an issue. So far, this is everything I thought it would be and I absolutely love it. In my opinion, the display is extremely nice, HD 1080p, and the screen is low-glare, so it looks great and is easy on the eyesight. In addition to the newer model proc, the screen is another nice upgrade from the previous Zenbook. The keyboard is perfect and comfortable (and backlit, which the previous Zenbook was lacking). It's very light and portable, fits in my purse with the included envelope-type sleeve, which is a pretty decent cover, at least until I find a sleeve or case I like better.

After researching many different models and manufacturers, the only other "ultrabook" that I considered before purchasing the Zenbook Prime was the Macbook Air. I'm not an Apple product hater, but I honestly just prefer a Windows machine, so this ultrabook was the clear winner for me, and I couldn't be happier with it so far. I could go on and on comparing the two machines, and describing the technical specs of this Zenbook Prime, but there are so many technical reviews out there that already do that very well (and I think Apple/Mac vs. PC/Windows thing that I constantly see on forums everywhere is so boring it's ridiculous!!!!), so I'm just giving my initial personal experience and opinions about this product that I purchased in this review. It is awesome! It's lived up to all the critical acclaim and all of my expectations of it so far.

Samsung Series 5 Chromebook (Wi-Fi)

I am very happy with my Samsung Chromebook. I had been looking for a computer that was fast, easy to use and did not keep breaking down so when Google announced the Chromebook Pilot program I signed up and got the CR-48. I really liked my CR-48 and therefore bought the Samsung Chromebook with 3G at the Gilt flash sale. I've had it now for a few days and am very happy with it.

The Samsung Chromebook is very light weight and portable; and I like its clean looks and solid finish. The keyboard is amazing and the trackpad is HUGE. It also feels a lot faster than the CR-48. The software on the CR-48 kept improving and getting better in the 6 months I had it and it feels like its gotten even better on the Samsung Series 5. There's now a file manager and a media player and it is super easy to upload photos to Picasa. And ofcourse it has Chrome which is fast.

The setup was ridiculously simple. As soon as I logged in all my apps, bookmarks and settings came in and it felt like I was back on my old computer. In all I think I went from closed box to fully ready in a couple of minutes. This was truly amazing. All the other benefits of the CR-48: the fast boot, quick resume and built in 3G are all there in this Chromebook.

I would recommend a Chromebook to anyone; but when people ask me if this is right for them this is what I say: it's great if you primarily use a laptop/ notebook for your personal stuff which, at least for me, is almost all web-based - gmail, facebook, amazon, youtube, google docs. For 'work' I use design software (Adobe CS5, Autocad, etc) that needs serious processing power and a large screen; and thus I use a high-end laptop, but that means it's heavy and cumbersome. The Chromebook is my personal computer and it works perfectly for that purpose - we leave it lying around the house and pick it up whenever we need to do something that is not work related. It also helps that its battery life is phenomenal. When my parents (NOT tech-savvy) were over they also used the CR-48 a lot and it worked great for them. I plan to get a new Chromebook for them too. So if you want a notebook for personal use that works fast, is reliable and inexpensive, get this one.
